This is the brutal moment 5 hungry hyenas corner and eat a zebra with broken back feet alive while it tries its best to escape the predators. This ruthless sighting was captured by 28-year-old, guide/manager at   Royal Safaris , Matthew Roach, while on a sunset game drive with his guests in Kruger National Park.     Matthew tells LatestSightings.com the story: “It was a good afternoon out on my usual sunset/night drive. I had six guests with me that day and another safari vehicle with a guide following close by. We had spent the afternoon slowly making our way to a leopard that had been hanging around for the past few days in hopes that we might find her and her cub.”   “We were lucky enough to find her and spend 10 minutes with her before moving on. Unfortunately, her cub was not around. As we left the sighting a vehicle approached us and told us there were hyena blocking the road ahead. We went to investigate! As we drove around the first corner, we spotted five hy...

Family survives after bull elephant batters and flips car at Lake St Lucia

A family’s outing to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal turned into a nightmare when a bull elephant charged, battered and then overturned their vehicle at the weekend.  The occupants – believed to be a husband, wife and their two children, aged eight and 10, from the coastal town of Mtunzini – were reported to be severely traumatised, but not seriously hurt. It is unclear why the elephant attacked the car, but it is understood that an investigation will be launched by park officials. Elephant bull is unimpressed with camera, kicks it over with his foot

Living and working in the African wild has given me many opportunities to film and document the behaviour of a vast number of wildlife species. One of my favourite species of wildlife to observe and film is the African elephant. On the rare occasion, as shown in this video, these African giants will let you know when they are not impressed by the presence of your filming equipment. This can lead to very interesting footage in the end.   It was late afternoon when I decided to head out into the wild on my own, kitted with all my filming equipment. I was specifically out searching for a herd of elephants to film. African elephants are my favourite animals to film in the wild as they are almost always busy doing something. Spending lots of time with any herd of elephants can deliver many memorable behaviours and experiences. The Kruger National Park hosts one of the largest populations of African elephant on the continent and finding these giants normally does not take too long. I cam...

Russia investigates circus after elephants ‘fight’ during performance

Russian authorities started an investigation on Monday into the Kazan circus after two elephants started what looked like fighting during a show. The elephants landed in an area where there were visitors. Incidents of animals becoming violent are relatively common at Russian circuses, which have made animal welfare organisations concerned about the way the animals are treated. The use of wild animals in circuses is still allowed in Russia. Video footage showed the female elephant Jenny pushing over the female elephant Magda, while they were performing at the circus on Sunday in the city of Kazan. Magda fell towards the crowd. On social media, it was said that one of the elephants fell because she was exhausted and lost her balance, but the Kazan circus said “the audience had witnessed a quarrel between Indian elephants Jenny and Magda” in a statement. “After years of exploitation, Jenny took on Magda on the Kazan Circus track in Russia. What do you expect from a world where ...

Wildlife guide and trainer Steve Faulconbridge was following the fresh spoor of lion cubs he had spotted while taking a tour group for a game drive in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve along the western border of Kruger National Park. Steve got out of the vehicle and was so engrossed with following the lion tracks, diligently explaining his movements to the safari group, that he didn’t realise he was walking right into the Nkuhuma pride of lions that was hidden in the long, golden grass. ‘Oh my word,’ Steve repeatedly proclaimed, as he realised where he was heading just in time as the lions got up and started to move off. ‘We’ve just bumped into a pride of lion.’ ‘Today’s tracks were very, very fresh,’ he later joked.
